Stakely donates 1.7 ETH to Ethereum R1, a public, transparent rollup aligned with Ethereum

At Stakely, we believe in a decentralized, sustainable, and technically sound infrastructure as the foundation for Ethereum’s future. That’s why we’ve decided to support Ethereum R1, a community initiative focused on building a rollup centered around credibility, neutrality, and open governance on Ethereum.
What is Ethereum R1?
Ethereum R1 is a public layer 2 (L2) rollup project defined by its commitment to Ethereum’s founding values: decentralization, neutrality, and censorship resistance.
It arises in response to a reality: many current L2s behave more like new blockchains (with their own governance, private funding, and centralized dependencies) than solutions truly designed for Ethereum.
Ethereum R1 offers the opposite approach: a public, transparent infrastructure, with no token, no presales, and funded solely through community donations.
Key features of Ethereum R1
- No token or presale.
- 100% funded by community donations.
- Permissionless from day one.
- Open governance and designed for upgradability.
- Full transparency, with decisions and updates open to the entire community. All decisions are archived for you to review!
- Stage 2 rollup from day one, meaning the rollup is fully managed by smart contracts from the beginning, with a permissionless fraud-proof system, protection against governance attacks, and safe exit paths for users in case of unwanted updates.
- Public goods funding model, where part of the fees will go toward R&D and application development through 2030—after that, fees will be burned.
Why does Stakely support Ethereum R1?
In a context where many scaling solutions are adopting centralized or highly speculative models, R1 offers an alternative built by the community, for the community.
That’s why we’ve made a donation of 1.7 ETH to support the project’s initial phase, which is currently under development.
Current phase: Open design and community collaboration
Ethereum R1 is currently in Phase 0 of its roadmap, focused on three key objectives:
- Complete technical specification of the rollup, based on the open-source stacks of Taiko and Nethermind.
- Design of a governance model aligned with Ethereum, allowing Ethereum participants to have real influence over the upgrade process.
- Development planning, with clear milestones, responsibilities, and a transparent budget.
During this phase, all teams are working on a voluntary basis. No funds will be used until the defined technical and governance goals are achieved. If the minimum funding target of 1000 ETH is not reached by September 1, 2025, or if deliverables are not met, donations will be refunded.
Would you like to get involved?
The project progresses every week with open weekly calls, asynchronous discussions, and thematic sessions. Join in and be part of the momentum driving Ethereum R1 to Phase 1, which will include: development, devnet deployment, and infrastructure ready to operate securely and efficiently.
